If you had told Matt Zollers in fall camp that at some point in the 2025 season, he would be starting a SEC conference game, Zollers would’ve likely laughed at you. After all, the former 5-star recruit was listed as the 3rd string QB to start the season, sitting behind Beau Pribula and Sam Horn. Zollers was ready to run the scout team, and to hold the clipboard, taking in the moment on the sideline. However, this mighty land of college football is an insane sport and in the blink of an eye, things change.
In the first game of the season, Sam Horn took a designed QB run up the gut. In an instant, Horn was sidelined for the rest of the season. Matt Zollers was now officially the backup quarterback. In Zollers’s first game, Zollers came in and went 3-3, for 61 yards and a touchdown to Jude James, something that is seemingly becoming a theme. Against UMASS and Louisiana, Zollers would go 3/3 for a combined 17 yards.
Following that UMASS game, Mizzou fans felt like that was the last they would see of Zollers, as no other games would likely grant the freshman a opportunity. However, this sport is bananas and injuries loom…
With roughly 11 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter against Vanderbilt, Mizzou would see itself on the Commodores’ one-yard line, 4th and goal, with an opportunity to take the lead. Pribula, in a similar fashion to Sam Horn, would take a designed QB run up the middle. Pribula was hit instantly, getting pushed back in uncomfortable fashion. The ankle of Pribula would get put under the pile, leading to a rare, dislocated ankle, but without a fracture. There is a small chance that Pribula will be back; however, it is not likely.
In came Matt Zollers, hoping to help the Tigers get a massive win in Nashville, with college football playoff implications. Zollers first drive would give the Tigers hope, following an offensive display that left much to be desired. Zollers would make several key throws on a 12-play, 37-yard drive, including a crucial 4th down completion to Joshua Manning. Zollers showed poise in the pocket and a live arm, things that fans had not yet seen. Robert Meyer however would miss the kick, keeping the game at 3-3. Vanderbilt would take the next play 80 yards for a touchdown, a striking blow to the Tigers short-lived momentum.
However, despite the blow, the true-freshman QB would deliver a terrific display of moxy, leading the team on another 12-play drive, this time resulting in a touchdown pass to… you guessed it, Jude James.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows however, as the youngster would both a handoff, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by Vanderbilt. That would lead to a Commodores TD, putting the game at 17-10 with 1:30 on the clock.
Zollers would put together a praiseworthy effort, evading the rush, forcing a DPI on 3rd to extend the drive. He would also find Coleman Jr on a pivotal fourth-down completion that would keep the drive alive. Following an intentional grounding, Zollers would have one last shot to save the game. Zollers would throw from about the 40 on a hail mary attempt, getting it to the half-yard line. Coleman Jr would come down with a terrific catch, but just inches short. A heartbreaker for the Tigers, leaving an uphill battle to the College Football Playoff.
Despite the loss, it’s an exciting time to be a Mizzou fan. The Tigers, though unlikely, still have an outside shot to make the playoffs, with the future of the position getting meaningful reps in the SEC. Not to mention, the kid has all the talent you could ever need to win games. With Zollers likely in for the rest of the year, I wanted to discuss how this could affect the offense and 3 things that will be new, or just flat out improve:
- A downfield threat that will keep teams honest: I am going to be completely honest, guys. This offense was incredibly one-dimensional before Zollers, and it’s not JUST Kirby Moore’s fault. Kirby Moore has taken a lot of flak, and trust me, I’m with you in several of those areas. However, when your quarterback has the tendency to not stay in the pocket, a downfield passing game doesn’t and cannot exist. The biggest difference between Zollers and Pribula? Zollers is a natural passer; Pribula is not. It’s quite simple.
Pribula naturally wants to throw on the run and also look for running lanes. That’s his game, and it certainly has its perks. Zollers, on the flip side, will stand in the pocket, go through progressions, and keep eyes downfield. He will run if needed, but that’s not what he desires to do. Zollers has a far better arm; the eye test shows that. He is more gifted as a passer; the eye test shows that. Missouri’s offense looked significantly better with Zollers last week, and had a threat to throw downfield.
2. A better run game: This point directly correlates with point number one and that’s because of this reason. With a quarterback that wants to throw and can certainly do it, teams will likely not put 7-8 in the ox every play. Now, maybe they do this to see how Zollers handles this, but just seeing Zollers get absolutely drilled against Vanderbilt on a completion, I have full confidence that Zollers can manage.
With teams potentially only playing five in the box, or just six, this gives Ahmad Hardy a chance to get his imprint on the game early and often, something that the Tigers have been missing. With Pribula at QB, teams were daring the Tigers to throw. They simply could not, at least at an efficient clip. I believe that changes with Zollers, allowing Hardy and Roberts to have more of an impact. If those guys get going, the Tigers are a much better football team.
3. More balanced drives, with more shot plays: With Zollers at QB, Kirby Moore will be more inclined to dial up pass plays, as well as the occasional play action. Again, with Pribula at quarterback, the offense was incredibly predictable, but now a threat has been added. I could be wrong about this, but just a hunch.
In summary, I think Zollers will get meaningful reps, and we will see glimpses as to why he is labeled the future. I would expect mistakes, as he is a true freshman, but it should be compelling to watch nonetheless.
