The first half was an ugly, sloppy mess. Auburn opened up the game with a scoring drive, capped off by a two-yard Jackson Arnold run. The drive was favored by a pass interference call on Marvin Burks, with a flag coming in about 15 seconds after the play. The play was a fourth and two, with the pass being incomplete. Auburn capitalized however on the call, giving them a 7-0 lead.
Missouri’s first offensive drive didn’t spark much confidence, as the Auburn front seven came out with their heads on fire. Missouri’s first 3 carries resulted in a grand total of -4 yards, and Mizzou would punt it away.
In an important spot, with Auburn getting an opportunity to go up two scores, Mizzou would secure a crucial takeaway, courtesy of a Toriano Pride interception. Mizzou would start its drive at the 29 and would get down to the seven. After not being able to get in for six, the field goal unit would trot out, resulting in three.
The Missouri front seven would make an impact on the ensuing drive, with Chris McClellan taking down Arnold on 3rd and 10. Missouri would take over at the 35, and from there, Ahmad Hardy would pick up some steam. On the first two plays, Hardy would rush for 24 yards, immediately putting Mizzou past midfield. Marquis Johnson would make his presence felt with a beautiful run after the catch on a screen, and Mizzou would set up shop in the red zone. From there, Ahmad Hardy would find the end zone on a two-yard run, putting Mizzou in the lead 10-7.
Missouri’s defense would force a three-and-out, giving the Missouri offense the opportunity to start to gash Auburn. However, a 12-play drive, that amassed 61 yards resulted in an interception, giving Auburn the ball with time to score. However, Auburn would drive down and miss a field goal to close out the half, leaving it at 10-7 Missouri
The next 3 drives would be ugly and uninspiring, with both teams going scoreless. Hilariously enough, Auburn missed another field goal, giving Mizzou another break. Auburn, however, eventually got some offense going, and boy, they did it quick. In 12 plays, in just under five minutes, Auburn went 86 yards. Auburn went through Jeremiah Cobb, and Cobb gashed the Tiger defense. Eventually, true freshman Omar Mabson found the end-zone.
Auburn would later get a field goal, which was a big stop by the Missouri defense. Then, finally, the offense would get going, and a 5-play, 60-yard touchdown drive would tie this game at 17. Missouri got the benefit of two 15-yard penalties, putting Mizzou at the Auburn 39. Donovan Olugbode came up with a huge 27-yard reception, and from there, that’s all Mizzou needed.
Missouri had a shot to win this game, even getting down to the Auburn 30 with under a minute to go. However, Mizzou took a bad sack and even lost yards on a backwards pass, forcing Pribula to throw long on third down. It was picked, and we were heading to overtime.
Craziness would ensue. Missouri would start out on defense, and they would come out hot, pushing Auburn back. Auburn would kick a field goal, and they missed… again. Missouri would get the ball to the 20, with a chance to win the game. The true freshman, Robert Meyer, missed it just a few inches left. Brutal.
Missouri would start the second overtime with the ball and would immediately be at a third and 10, needing points. Beau, under pressure, would complete a crucial first-down pass. From there, Beau Pribula ran it well and even finished the drive off with a three-yard touchdown run of his own. The 2 pt conversion was no good.
The Missouri defense would be stout on the final drive of the game, with Zion Young sealing the game with a massive sack. Mizzou wins 23-17 in a very ugly game, but improves to 6-1 and might be featured in Gameday next week against Vanderbilt.
